The 7th annual “David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic” took place at Alsol Luxury Village in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, from December 4-7. Proceeds from this four-day affair benefited the David Ortiz Children's Fund, in partnership with the World Pediatric Project and MassGeneral Hospital for Children, which provides critical pediatric healthcare to children in New England and Ortiz’s native Dominican Republic.
The event netted an incredible $225,000 for the David Ortiz Children’s Fund and was attended by some of the biggest names in sports - both past and present - including Hanley Ramirez, Robinson Cano, Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Jose Bautista, Gary Sheffield, Barry Larkin, Jim Rice, and many more. (Full list below.)
On Friday evening, ESPN’s Steve Levy & Marcellus Wiley served as the emcees of the “draft” at the Golf Pairings party where Ortiz’s former teammate, Pedro Martinez, was selected for the top spot. On Saturday, the celebrities served as captains for the golf teams at the Punta Espada Golf Course. The first place finishers were led by comedian Josh Wolf and the second place team was led by Brandon Siler. Micky Ward and Barry Larkin served as co-captains on the team that placed third.
True to form, Papi made sure to take quite a few “selfies” with his friends on the golf course! At the Awards Gala on Saturday evening, guests had a chance to bid on some priceless items at the silent and live auctions including hitting lessons with David Ortiz, lunch with Pedro Martinez, an autographed jersey from Ted Williams and a signed baseball from Derek Jeter. Children from the Dominican Republic who the David Ortiz Children’s Fund has provided assistance for served as the evening’s special guest attendees.
