Day 1 of the ILDC team championships began today Tuesday at a very windy and challenging grid at Los Mangos Golf Resort in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Hitters from Canada, USA and South Africa faced tough headwinds and an even tougher 45 yard grid for Todays team championships. Each team consists of 3 men, 1 woman and 1 senior man. The total score of their 5 longest drives comprises the team score.
Dominican Republic long drive team led by Latin American PGA professional Julio Santos defeated Team Canada 2 to advance to The winners bracket. They face Team Canada 4 on Thursday . Closest match of the day went to USA 1 vs CAN 1 with the USA team consisting of two World Champions, Mike Dobbyn and Heather LeMaster. The match came down to the last hitter with Bobby Petersens 301 edging out Stephen Lowes 291 for Team USA 1 to win by 10 yards. The event is a double elimination format so each team must lose twice to be eliminated.
Longest ball of the day in the tough conditions went to Kevin Shook with 333 yards.
Women start the day tomorrow at 9am , followed by Seniors at 10:30 and Open at 12. Team play resumes in the afternoon.
The event is held at the Los Mangos Golf Club in Puerto Plata.
